What is the Most Haunted Place in Indiana? You Can Actually Drive THROUGH it!
There are many reportedly haunted places in the Hoosier State, but you don't even need to leave your car to experience this one.
Hauntings in the Hoosier State
One thing I love is a good ghost story! In Indiana, we are no strangers to tales of hauntings, and some creepy history. Right here in Southern Indiana, we have a couple of notoriously haunted places like Willard Public Library, and the quaint town of New Harmony, which has many ghostly tales surrounding it. And that's just keeping it local, there are many more hauntings beyond our area! But what place is considered the most haunted in all of Indiana? The answer may be a bit surprising as it's not a building, but rather, a bridge.
Named the Most Haunted Place in Indiana
Recently Thrillest put out an article listing the most haunted location in each state, and for Indiana, they chose the infamous Avon Bridge. This bridge is located in Avon, Indiana and the legends surrounding it are spine-chilling.
Thrillest even named this bridge of the creepiest looking in the nation.
Indiana is filled with enough haunted inns and estates to pack a whole town, but for a little skin-crawling outside of a big city, head to the sleepy bedroom community of Avon, home to one of the nation’s creepiest-looking haunted bridges.
The legends that surround this bridge definitely make it even creepier, and after reading this, would you still drive under this bridge?
Spine Chilling Legends
The Avon Bridge was built in 1906 and is well known among the locals for the legends surrounding the historic bridge. According to VisitHendricksCounty.com there isn't any written history about why the bridge may be haunted, but local lore says otherwise. There are two legends surrounding the bridge that seem to be the most commonly told, the lost mother, and the legend of the wet cement.
The Legend of the Lost Mother
Visit Hendricks County Easily the most notorious legend told is of a mother who was walking along the train tracks over the bridge with her infant. The mother slipped and both fell to their deaths (goodness this is DARK). The legend claims you can still hear the sounds of screams when you drive by the bridge. How fun, count me in...not. Okay, the next legend I'm not sure is much better, but at least no babies were harmed in this next one...
The Legend of The Wet Cement Burial
Visit Hendricks County also shares the legend of the drunken rail worker and the wet cement that he fell into. According to the story, a rail worker had slipped during the construction of the bridge and was buried alive in the wet cement. The tale says every time a train goes over the bridge, you can still hear the moans of the rail worker during his untimely death.
