If you wear mascara, chances are you've had a few dried up tubes of it lying around.  Here's why you shouldn't throw them away, and how the wands could help out animals!

The Appalachian Wildlife Refuge is s a nonprofit that coordinates the needs of wildlife rehabilitation in Western North Carolina providing care for injured and orphaned wildlife, support for the wildlife rehabilitation network and conservation education to the community.  While they may not be local, they've gone viral with the reason they're asking you to send them your old mascara wands.

They can use those wands to  remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of wild animals. They work great because the bristles are close together.

So if you have any old mascara tubes lying around, take the wand out, clean it with warm soapy water, and send it to P.O. Box 1211, Skyland, NC 28776.  They also ask that you get the package weighed so you can be sure you're sending it with the correct postage.

Check out this video of animals being helped with the wands, how cool  is that! Hopefully more wildlife rescues will follow suit!
