I remember my dad telling me that when he was a child, his dad left his mom with four small children to raise on her own. She was a nurse but there was a war going on and things were really tough. He said that some days his only meal was at school and it was always soup. Fast forward to today, and there are still lots of kids - even locally - who rely on their meals coming from the school. But what do they do when they aren't in school? Good question...

Thankfully, there are people who care. The good folks at Chapel Hill Church in Henderson, KY, are a drop point for the Backpack Program.

This past week, Chapel Hill successfully packed 42 bags and several extra meals for their Backpack Program. Each bag contained three cereals, three oatmeal, three pop tarts, peanut butter, box of saltines, macaroni & cheese, chicken noodle soup, beef stew, tuna fish, ravioli, nitro grain bar, two packages of goldfish crackers, two packages of peanut butter crackers, and two bags of popcorn.

I asked Sara Beth Shelton about what they need to restock their backpack program:

We take donations all year long ( food and some people give monetary donations). We donate for 26 kids each week during the school year. Each bag has enough food for a weekend. Peanut butter all sizes, saltine crackers, peanut butter crackers, soups (all varieties), ravioli, Spaghetti-o’s, beef stew, hormel meals (all kinds of options), tuna fish (several flavors), mashed potato bowls, fruit cups, popcorn, snack cakes, chips, cheez its, raisins, Nutri grain bars, granola bars, cereal, oatmeal, pop tarts, any individually wrapped items are accepted.

I see a lot of people who voice their opinions about how children are treated on social media. I urge you take it a step further and do something about it - and you can start with helping local kids! The next time you go to the grocery store, spend an extra $5 or $10 and grab a couple extra items that will make a child's life a little bit easier. Donations can be made at:
