It's July and we live in the Tri-State. Hot and humid weather is what we've come to expect this time of year. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't protect ourselves when that heat and humidity reaches dangerous levels.

With a temperature in the mid '90's forecast for today and a heat index that will make it feel closer to 105, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of the Tri-State including all of southern Illinois, and several counties in both southern Indiana and western Kentucky. The advisory will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Central Time.

The counties in orange on the map below are impacted by the advisory.

If you, or someone you know, needs to be outside for an extended period of time for work or some type of practice, make sure you take regular breaks and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to avoid heat exhaustion or worse.

...HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM CDT
THIS EVENING...

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Heat
Advisory, which is in effect from 10 AM this morning to 7 PM CDT
this evening.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES... Around 105 due to temperatures in the lower
to middle 90s, and dew points in the mid 70s.

* IMPACTS...The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during
outdoor exertion or extended exposure. The very young, the
elderly, those without air conditioning, and those
participating in strenuous outdoor activities will be the most
susceptible. Also, car interiors can reach lethal temperatures
in a matter of minutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids...stay in an air-conditioned
room...stay out of the sun...and check up on relatives and
neighbors.

Take extra precautions...if you work or spend time outside.
When possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work...the occupational safety
and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest
breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome
by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat
stroke is an emergency...call 9 1 1.
