So far in 2026, we have already more than tripled the average number of tornadoes we get in Indiana. The numbers are wild.

As you know, this time of year in Indiana is prime tornado season. For the fourth year in a row, Indiana's confirmed tornado count has risen. That means that each year, the Hoosier State has seen an increased number of confirmed tornadoes. In Indiana, 49 tornadoes have been confirmed thus far in June 2026. That breaks the record of 47, which was set in 1990. However, the data gets more wild than that.

Tornadoes in Indiana

Recently, Meteorologists have discovered that "Tornado Alley" is shifting east. This new area of "Tornado Alley" now includes portions of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. This makes some sense, as it seems we have been hearing more and more about tornadoes in Indiana over the past few years. We have seen some pretty devastating tornadoes make their way through the state, leaving people without homes and tragically, taking the lives of several Hoosiers. Take the tornado outbreak of June 21st, for example. Sunday night’s severe weather spawned more than a dozen tornadoes across Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, Indiana averages about 22 tornadoes a year across the state. In 2024, 57 tornadoes were recorded in the Hoosier State. Last year was the second most active year on record, with 61 tornadoes. And if you need any more evidence that tornado alley has shifted east, wait until you see the numbers so far in 2026.

How Many Confirmed Tornadoes Has Indiana Gotten So Far in 2026?

According to NWS, 72 tornadoes have hit so far in 2026. That ties the record set in 2011—and we’re only halfway through Indiana’s typical tornado season. That, of course, is as of the time of this writing on June 24th. Chances are, we will see more confirmed tornadoes before the season is up. Hopefully not, though, because that's not a record that we really want to break. The National Weather Service has a ton of interesting tornado facts; you can read them all by clicking here.
