It may be hot, but leaving that fan on all night long while you sleep could cause some unexpected issues.

In case you haven't noticed, it's been pretty hot here in Indiana recently. Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s throughout the week, with lows in the mid to upper 70s. That means that your AC will probably be working overtime to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Many Hoosiers find comfort at night by sleeping with a fan on to stay cool. Heck, I know a lot of people who sleep with a fan on year-round, not just for comfort, but because the sound helps them fall asleep. However, experts warn Indiana residents that they should NOT be running their fans at night. But why? Well, let's just say that it isn't due to their electricity bill.

Why You Shouldn't Sleep with a Fan on All Night

Whether you are using your ceiling fan or an electric fan to help you sleep at night, experts at Mattress Next Day are urging you to sleep without the fan on. There are several reasons for this. Let's break them down:

  • It can trigger allergens and asthma: Fans will stir up dust, pollen, pet hair, and other allergens. IF you must use a ceiling fan or electric fan, make sure that there is no dust on the blades before turning it on.
  • It can give you dry eyes and cause irritation: Sleeping with a fan on can dry out your skin, nose, throat, and even your eyes. You might wake up feeling thirsty or with a dry mouth or headache. You can even have coughing fits at night.
  • It can cause a stiff neck or sore muscles: Concentrated cool air can make your muscles tense and cramp up, causing you even more pain than you were already in.

  • It could spread germs in the room: If someone in the room is sick, a running fan can blow those germs around and make it easier for others to get sick too.

Furthermore, if your goal of sleeping with a ceiling fan or electric fan on at night is to stay cool while you sleep, there's a catch to that, too. When the air keeps changing from cool to warm, your body might have trouble staying comfortable. That can cause you to lose sleep at night, defeating the purpose entirely.

There are a few more reasons why these experts say that you shouldn't sleep with a fan on at night. You can check those out by clicking here. However, I think it's safe to say that with the extreme heat we are experiencing, your air conditioner might be struggling to do the job. So, having a ceiling or an electric fan on might be necessary to keep your room and home at a more bearable temperature.
