Though EVSC's school year might have ended just a bit ago, the summer still has plenty of opportunities for learning.

Summer Readings with the Evansville Police Department

As a child, many of my summers involved programs of tracking books I had read or taking part in readings at the library alongside my brother and friends. It was events like these that contributed massively to my love for reading, which has persisted even to this day. Because of this, I was excited last year to see that the Evansville Police Department had a series of summer reading programs available for children within the community. At the time, however, I did fear that this might have been a one-off.

It seems my fears were misplaced, though, as the second year of Read to Succeed: A Story with the EPD was announced in a press release. Like last year, the reading series is meant to support academic success within the community while also providing a place for socialization. Speaking on this matter, the EPD stated the following:

In an increasingly digital world, face-to-face interactions like shared reading experiences help build relationships and strengthen social connections.

I sincerely hope that this year's readings are a success, not just for what it's in support of, but also for the way that it has strived to include the spaces provided by public libraries.

Read to Succeed is a partnership between the EPD, EVSC, the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Libraries, and Barnes & Noble, with a donation of books from Read Evansville. The first event will be at Barnes & Noble on Monday, June 2nd, at 5:00p.
