This long-time bar has closed after decades of serving Evansville's west side.

Evansville's Bar Scene

There's no denying that Evansville's bar scene is alive and well from old staples that have been around for decades to new bars that are thriving.  There's something about a bar that can be described as a true "down home bar" where you can go, and see some familiar faces, eat some good food, and enjoy some cold beer. Evansville's west side recently said goodbye to a long-time establishment.

The Corner Bar's Final Cheers

The Corner Bar is located on Upper Mt. Vernon Road (take Franklin street just west of St. Joe), and has been a staple watering hole in Evansville for decades.  According to the Corner Bar's Facebook page they are described as a "westside neighborhood sports bar" and I'd say that description hits the nail on the head.

They were known for being the home of the Slim Jim, which was a big cold beer.  I have had a few Slim Jims at Corner Bar in my day!  So I was bummed when I saw the post from the  Fingers, Fork, Knife, and Spoon Evansville Facebook page where they announced that Corner Bar has officially closed after being open for decades.

Corner Bar's history dates back to when it was  Zenthoefer’s in the 1960s.  The name of the bar and ownership has changed over the past decades, but the dive bar feel and cold beer have remained the same.

Here is the post about the closure from Fingers, Fork, Knife, and Spoon Evansville:

Long Time West Side Corner Bar Closes
The New Corner Bar & Grill closed it's doors for the final time last week. It was a great local drinking spot, a hangout for college students living in the area, and a long time neighborhood staple.
It operated as Billy G’s in the 1990's, Karns Korner (owned by Jim Karns) in the 1989’s, Wolf's Tavern (owned by Gary Wolf) in the early 1970's, and it was also Zenthoefer’s in the mid-1960s. The Corner Bar and Grill was most recently owned by Thomas A. Diehl, who passed away this January.
I have seen several comments from people that the hamburgers were very similar in taste to what was served at the Tennessean!

Whether you were a regular at Corner Bar, an occasional patron, or never had the chance to go and enjoy an ice-cold Slim Jim (which is truly a shame), it's always sad to hear about a local establishment closing its doors.
