How Much Cash Can You Make Cleaning an Indiana Porta-Potty?
The average hourly pay for cleaning portable toilets in Indiana is much lower than you might expect.
If you've ever stepped foot in a portable toilet, more commonly referred to as a "porta-potty" or "Porta John," then you likely know they're not the most comfortable place to do your business. Despite advances in ventilation, climbing into one of those turd toters becomes an even greater challenge in the blistering heat during the summer. That said, when you have to go, sometimes a porta-potty is your only option.
Many folks claim that porta-potties are much less sanitary than regular restrooms, which is an apparent myth that I've believed in for years. According to Showbiz Restrooms, porta potties are much easier to clean and are therefore cleaned more often than public restrooms, making them more sanitary. However, I've entered a few units over the years that might counter that statistic. Regardless, a video of the process is now circulating on TikTok posted by @portapottyprince1, and it not only addresses the question of how to clean a portable toilet but also poses a new one about the going rate for sanitation.

In the above video, you can see an individual cleaning a well-used porta-potty with the caption, "Would you do this job for 10,000 dollars a month?" If you ask me, that's a no-brainer. I've never been afraid to get my hands dirty, so give me a scrub brush and write me a check. Unfortunately, the actual hourly rate for cleaning a mobile toilet in Indiana is significantly lower than that. According to ZipRecruiter, the average hourly pay for a portable toilet cleaner as of July 5, 2024, in Indiana is just $12.68 an hour. In order to make $10,000 a month at that rate, you would have to work about 789 hours a month.
While $12.68 an hour might appear on the low end, it's worth noting that there are some jobs in the Hoosier State that pay around $20 per hour for such services. While I won't be trading my microphone and keyboard for rubber gloves anytime soon, I've got a lot of respect for those brave enough to scrub those portable crap shacks. As the popular saying goes, "not all heroes wear capes."
