An Unassuming Patch of Grass in the Middle of a Kentucky Airport is Actually an Ancient Burial Ground
Recently, I was scrolling through social media and a video came across my feed from a creator named SamHeineLouisville, and he shared something that absolutely blew my mind. Did you know there's an ancient burial ground in the middle of a Kentucky airport? I had to do some digging to learn more.
The UPS Worldport in Louisville, Kentucky
UPS Worldport is the largest UPS facility in the world, and this huge facility is located in Louisville. According to Aero Savvy, UPS Worldport spans approximately 5.2 million square feet with a perimeter of 7.2 miles. The amount of packages that go through this hub is mind-boggling, with Aero Savvy reporting about 115 packages being processed per second which comes out to about two million packages a day. However, during Christmas time, they can sometimes see double that amount of packages daily. What's also wild is this facility handles about one aircraft each minute during peak arrival times, so there's always hustle and bustle coming in and out of this hub.
With UPS Worldport being a massive hub for shipping, it's one of the last places you'd expect to find ancient history, but UPS Worldport has a fascinating piece of history located right smack dab in the middle of it!
The Ancient Burial Ground in the Middle of A Kentucky Airport
If you look at satellite images of UPS Worldport, you'll notice a small patch of grass in the middle of sprawling concrete.
You could have given me a hundred guesses, and I never would have guessed what this patch of grass was. This particular area is not developed, because it's the location of an ancient burial ground.

I have been searching online and trying to find out more information on this ancient burial ground, and the most I was able to find was where officials with UPS Worldport confirmed with WLKY that there were ancient remains found at that location years ago, before the Worldport was built, but out of respect for the dead they left it undeveloped.

Who Is Buried at the UPS Worldhub Ancient Burial Ground?
According to Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, indigenous people have lived on the land we know today as Kentucky for more than 12,000 years.
I can't find any information on who exactly is buried at this particular site. While looking at the maps provided by Kentuckians For the Commonwealth, it seems likely this particular burial site would belong to either Shawnee, Cherokee, or Osage people. Having this small undisturbed piece of land in the middle of such a massive and bustling hub is a quiet reminder of the people who called this land home long before we ever did.
