Buzzfeed just released a list that might make you think twice about what you eat. According to Buzzfeed, the FDA has a document called the Defect Levels Handbook that says what types of defects mass-produced food can have in it and still be considered "safe" to eat.

This basically means that there is the possibility that some pretty gross things are in the foods that we eat every day...and when I say "gross," I mean "EXTREMELY gross!"

Now, before we get to that, Buzzfeed did make mention of one important thing about the limit the FDA allows on these defects.

It is incorrect to assume that because the FDA has an established defect action level for a food commodity, the food manufacturer need only stay just below that level. The defect levels do not represent an average of the defects that occur in any of the products—the averages are actually much lower. The levels represent limits at which FDA will regard the food product "adulterated"; and subject to enforcement action under Section 402(a)(3) of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act.

Okay, so now what you have been waiting on. The list of disgusting things that the FDA allows in your food. Below is the list of the defects the FDA allows, along with the amount that they allow in there for it to be considered safe to eat. I'm warning you though, you may not want to eat some of these foods again.

Here are some of the items on Buzzfeed's list:

  1. Beetle eggs in your canned or frozen asparagus.- 10% by count of spears or pieces are infested with 6 or more attached asparagus beetle eggs and/or sacs.

  2. Mites in frozen broccoli. - There can be up to 60 mites per 100 grams of broccoli without breaking any laws.  100 grams is about three-and-a-half ounces.

  3. Maggots in your maraschino cherries. - 5% is the cutoff.  That means that you could still get a jar of cherries that is 4% maggots...which is "comforting."
  4. Rodent hairs in cinnamon. - The FDA says that every fifty grams can have up to 11 hairs in it.
  5. Sand in your raisins.  You can have up to 40 milligrams of sand per 100 grams of raisins.
  6.  "Mammalian excreta" in your ginger. - That's rat poop, for those who didn't know. Every pound of ginger is allowed to have up to three milligrams of rat poop mixed in.
  7. Mildew in your canned greens.-  the FDA says that  the average of 10% or more of leaves, by count or weight, showing mildew over 1/2" in diameter.

  8. Insect fragments in your macaroni. - The FDA says that there is an average of 225 insect fragments or more per 225 grams in 6 or more subsamples. Mac and cheese and bugs anyone?

  9. Worms and mold in your canned and frozen peaches.-  If FDA checkers finds an "average of 3% or more fruit by count are wormy or moldy," they are considered no good.

  10. Fly eggs and maggots in your canned tomatoes.- Canned tomatoes are considered bad when there's an average of 10 or more fly eggs per 500 grams OR 5 or more fly eggs and 1 or more maggots per 500 grams OR 2 or more maggots per 500 grams.
