No, we didn't forget a zero, only 12 people reside in this tiny town.

Indiana's Smallest and Largest

It should come as no surprise that the Hoosier State's capital, Indianapolis is the largest city in the state.  With a population of more than 880,000 people, Indianapolis is the 16th largest city in the country.  So it's no shock that Naptown is the biggest city in the state, but this had me wondering, what is the smallest town in the state?

New Amsterdam, Indiana

Located along the Ohio River in Harrison County, Indiana sits the smallest town in the state, New Amsterdam.  According to Census.Gov, in the 2020 census, New Amsterdam had a population of 12.  And when you look at just how small this town is, it makes sense that there isn't room for a ton of people.

What to Do in a Town of 12

This little town is so small that it isn't easy to find a ton of information about it online.  What I have found though, this town isn't far from the Louisville, Kentucky metro area, so folks from New Amsterdam don't have to travel very far to find entertainment. Although with a population as small as 12, it seems folks in New Amsterdam may like a quieter life.

I did find a really fun article from The Herald Times from 2001, where the journalist traveled to New Amsterdam to see what a town that small had to offer.  What he found was a really neat historic general store and friendly people who were happy to share their town's history with him.

Unfortunately, the most recent update I could find about Shaffer General Store is that the store is no longer open and the building was up for sale as recently as last year.  You can see some neat photos of the old general store on the Zillow listing, here. I hope whoever bought it can bring some life back to this tiny town.
