Kentucky Destination Among Best Kayaking Spots in the Midwest
There is still plenty of time to enjoy summer, and one kayaking destination in Kentucky is the perfect place to take part in an outdoor adventure.
We are now over halfway through summer 2024. Can you believe it? Sometimes I feel I can get so busy preparing for the next season that I forget to enjoy the season I'm in now. Luckily, there is still plenty of time to enjoy summer, and there are no shortage of activities to do just that. There is one place in Kentucky that I've now put on my outdoor bucket list, and it's definitely something that would make for some great family memories.
According to Outdoor Adventure Sampler, "The Gorge Underground," in the Red River Gorge region of Kentucky, is one of the best places to float on water in the Midwest. Guests can travel in a typical boat or even float along the waters in a see-through kayak with LED lights, which provide an optimal view of the rainbow trout swimming through the caverns. Guided and unguided tour options are available, which showcase a post-flood abandoned mine from the 1980s. Tours can last anywhere from 30 minutes to about 1.5 hours, depending on your selection.
The gorge covers about 29,000 acres and lies in the Daniel Boone National Forest, which is located in Wolfe County, Kentucky. In addition to the underground kayaking excursion, the area also features an intricate canyon system with an abundance of high sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, and natural bridges. It's safe to say you could easily make a day, or even a weekend, out of a trip to the Red River Gorge. On that note, it looks like I have some planning to do.
