Special Veterans Day Flag Unfurling Ceremony on November 9th

In observation of Veterans Day, American flags will return to their place of prominence on historic buildings in Downtown Evansville. The DOWNTOWN EVANSVILLE - Economic Improvement District (EID) is coordinating a Veterans Day Flag Unfurling Ceremony on Friday, November 9th at 2:45pm in front of the Ford Center at the corner of 6^th & Main. The ceremony is free to attend and open to the public. The brief ceremony will include remarks by the Honorable Lloyd Winnecke, Mayor of Evansville, a prayer of thanks for our Veterans by Stew Armstrong, pastor of Encounter Church, and patriotic music by the Red Banks Reunion Band. The ceremony will conclude with unfurling the flag at the historic American Trust and Savings Bank, currently home to VPS Architecture.

The effort to return the flags began following a conversation between EID Director Josh Armstrong and Michael Schopmeyer, Partner at Kahn Dees Donovan and Kahn. Currently, about a dozen historic flag poles are missing an U.S. or Indiana flag. “Mike has been the unofficial flag-bearer of Downtown Evansville for almost two-decades,” Armstrong said. “The EID looks forward to continuing his patriotic efforts throughout our neighborhood.” During the ceremony one of these flags will be raised back to its place of prominence on an historic building. “We see the raising of these flags serving two purposes; first, of course, the opportunity to demonstrate our City’s long-standing patriotic orientation,” said Armstrong. “But also, we see the flags as an important part of the historic preservation of our historic buildings,” he added.
