Less than 24 hours after announcing he was voluntarily stopping medical treatment for brain cancer, the family of Arizona Senator John McCain announces his death at the age of 81.

His daughter and one of the hosts of The View, Meghan McCain, released a statement just before 8:00 p.m. Central released the following statement about her father through her Twitter account:

McCain served in the U.S. Senate for over 30 years and was the Republican nominee for President in 2008. He is also well known for his military service. As a member of the U.S. Navy, he was a Prisoner of War for five years during the Vietnam War after a plane he was piloting was shot down in 1967.
