The Consumer Product Safety Commission

The Consumer Product Safety Commission or CPSC for short, works to protect consumers from potentially dangerous products. The CPSC issues and enforces mandatory safety standards for consumer products. The CPSC is also behind the banning and recall of unsafe consumer products.

In 2021 the CPSC issued a recall of a popular baby lounger after multiple deaths were reported. Now in 2023, the CPSC is urging people to STOP using and selling this product immediately after two more deaths have occurred.

Stop Using Recalled Newborn Loungers Immediately

In 2021 the CPSC issued a recall for Boppy Loungers and other lounger-style pillows. The specific loungers listed in the recall are as follows:

• Boppy Original Newborn Loungers
• Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers
• Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers

The recall for these products was issued in September of 2021 after 8 infant deaths were reported.  The reason for these deaths is due to infants suffocating in the loungers after they rolled, moved, or were placed on the lounger in a way that restricted their breathing. Since the first initial recall, 2 more infant deaths have been reported. 

It is Illegal to Sell Recalled Products

After these products were recalled, many went to online places such as Facebook marketplace, groups for selling baby items, and other online shops to either purchase or re-sell these loungers as they were a very popular item.

The CPSC wants to remind folks that it is illegal to sell recalled items:

The Newborn Loungers have not been legal for sale since they were recalled, but since then, CPSC and Boppy have sent numerous requests to Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces to remove the recalled products that continue to appear for sale on their sites. It is unlawful to offer for sale a CPSC recalled product on an online marketplace or to sell or donate a recalled product in any other manner.

On a Personal Note

As a mom who has anxiety about everything, but especially my child's safety, this recall struck a chord with me.  When I was pregnant with my son these loungers were the latest product and all the rage.  I had one on my registry.  I'm thankful I wasn't gifted one.

I know those newborn days are tough, you're sleep deprived, and you have this tiny person who is 100% dependent on you.  I get it, it's so easy to want to put them down somewhere so they can nap and you can catch a small break, and items like these loungers are enticing.  But please if you need to do that, make sure you place your infant is placed somewhere safe, like a pack-n-play, bassinet, or in their crib.

Remember the ABCs of Safe Sleep:

• A- Alone
• B- on their back
• C- in a crib (bassinet or pack-n-play)
