Two swimmers were pulled away from the shore by the river current and were struggling to get back. 

According to a news release from the Newburgh Volunteer Fire Dept, a crew as dispatched for a water rescue in the area of the island east of the Newburgh Lock and Dam for report of individuals in the water and could not get back to shore.

When the crew arrived, they saw swimmers in the water. Fire apparatus Water 14 launched and responded. The individuals were located and removed from the water. The adults had been pulled by the river current away from shore and were struggling to get back.

Thankfully, no one was injured.

Newburgh Fire strongly encourages citizens to exercise extreme caution before swimming in the river. River currents are dangerous and extremely unpredictable or visible.
