New Diploma Grants Indiana Students Automatic College Entry
Indiana Governor Mike Braun officially signed new high school diploma requirements into law on Wednesday that will give students a more entrepreneurial approach to their education.
College is expensive. Between tuition, housing, books, supplies, food, all of that money adds up. Unless you have a full-ride scholarship, there's a good chance that you will be paying your student loans for quite a long time. That's why I try to instill good grades in school in my kids. Not only that, but it can be equally as stressful for students to get accepted into the college of their choice. However, a new law in Indiana will grant Hoosier students automatic acceptance into Indiana public colleges.

New High School Diplomas Coming to Indiana
Governor Mike Braun just unveiled a redesigned diploma program for Indiana high school students. This new initiative allows students to select one of three distinct pathways. These three pathways will cater to various objectives for students' future goals.
- Enrollment is designed for students aiming to attend college.
- Employment targets those looking to enter the workforce directly after graduation.
- Enlistment is for students who aspire to serve in the military.
So, what does all of this mean and how will it work? Let's break down these new diploma pathways in Indiana one by one. It should be noted that there will be different minimum requirements for each pathway with an "Honors Plus Seal" that students will work toward.
Enrollment Honors Plus Seal
Under this new system, students who select the Enrollment pathway and successfully complete the Enrollment Honors Plus Seal will be guaranteed automatic acceptance into all seven of Indiana's state colleges. Those colleges include:
- Purdue University
- Indiana University
- Ivy Tech Community College
- Ball State University
- Indiana State University
- University of Southern Indiana
- Vincennes University
According to WTHR, there will be additional colleges and universities added to the list, including a few private institutions.
Employment Honors Plus Seal
WTHR reports that students who receive the Employment Honors Plus Seal will get access to support from Ascend Indiana. This will help students connect with local employers and potentially earn positions in apprenticeship programs, including the Central Midwest Carpenters Union. Initiatives are underway to partner with Operating Engineers Local 150, and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce is encouraging businesses statewide to participate. That's a huge deal for those who want to go into the workforce after high school.
Enlistment Honors Plus Seal
The Enlistment Honors Plus Seal is designed for students who want to join the military. Upon receiving this diploma, students will be "uniquely qualified" to join the Indiana National Guard and other military branches. According to WTHR, once students are accepted to the Indiana National Guard, they can:
- Earn college credits for completing training and reduce the time and cost required to complete a degree.
- Gain direct access to veteran mentors, military career counselors, and college ROTC liaisons, who can provide college and career guidance
- Access priority job placement programs designed for military professionals, offering job interviews for federal employment and private-sector roles where military experience is highly valued.
There will be more information rolling out regarding these new programs for Indiana high school students in the coming months. One thing to note is that these new diploma requirements will go into effect for all students starting with the class of 2029, students who are currently in the eighth grade. However, Indiana schools can opt in to the new program starting with the 2025-26 school year.
