It seems like everyone is looking for ways to save money these days, as many people deal with the rising cost of everyday goods and wages that aren't able to keep up with rapidly rising prices. Forbes says that in 2024 we saw 7,325 business closures, and in 2025 that number is projected to more than double to nearly 15,000 stores. Recently we've seen closures from retailers like Party City, Big Lots, and Macy's. They say inflation as well as online shopping are two of the big reasons we are seeing brick-and-mortar stores closing in droves.
Discount Stores See Increase in Closures and Openings?
Here's what's interesting, The Forbes article on business closures also notes that discount stores saw the most closures in 2024, but also the most openings.
Inflation-weary consumers are shifting their buying habits. Discount outlets are expected to post the highest number of new stores this year, such as Dollar Tree, which is pivoting from its Family Dollar banner after closing over 700 FD stores last year, and Dollar General, that has already announced 60 openings. Ironically, discount stores led in both store closures, i.e. bankruptcies of 99 Centers Only Stores and Big Lots, as well as in store openings in 2024.

Bargain Hunt Announces Closures
Bargain Hunt is a discount retailer based out of Nashville, Tennessee that has grown to more than 90 stores across the Midwest. They specialize in buying closeouts, overstock, and returns and then passing those discounts on to consumers. However, they recently announced they would be closing all stores. This includes the Evansville, Indiana Bargain Hiunt location.
According to Bargain Hunt's website, they currently are running closeout sales at every location. These sales include 10%-40% off on top of the already discounted price tag. According to the Bargain Hunt website they are still receiving new products daily, so stop in often to get the best deals. They say gift cards need to be redeemed by February 14th, so it looks like this won't be a long closing period for Bargain Hunt, so if you like deals you may want to check asap.
