I LOVE watching folks from Owensboro succeed, especially when they are good people. Or former classmates! Or both!

In 2011, former Owensboroan Kevin Olusola joined four other vocalists to create Pentatonix.  They wowed audiences with their covers of today's hits and throwback favorites on The Sing-Off, a reality competition show for acappella groups. As the beatboxer, Kevin didn't originally do much singing, but he slayed every performance.

Beautiful Beatboxing Voice

He has always seemed to have a natural gift for music. Growing up, his instruments of choice were the saxophone and cello. I heard him play many times at music camp and school events, but I had never heard him sing until Pentatonix released a cover of Mary Did You Know? on a Christmas album. He had a line in the song that had fans (myself included) going wild about how beautiful Kevin's voice is.

Kevin Olusola's Dawn of a Misfit

Luckily, he's done a lot more singing since then, and Pentatonix has become a household name all over the world. After winning some Grammys and selling millions of records, Kevin has now released his own solo project. Mixing his love of classical music with modern hip hop, pop, and R&B influence, Dawn of a Misfit is now available wherever you enjoy listening to music.

Kevin Olusola on The Jennifer Hudson Show

To promote his new music, Kevin danced down the hall, AKA "Spirit Tunnel," at The Jennifer Hudson Show. He is SUCH a vibe. I dare you not to smile watching this clip!

His sweet and supportive parents sat in the audience while Kevin shared his story with the world. "Being a misfit doesn't mean you're broken, it means you're an original." He shared all kinds of inspirational advice about living an authentic life. Then, he blew Jennifer's mind with his special mashup style of celloboxing.

My mom was his middle school music teacher, and she just beams every time she sees how happy and successful Kevin has become. I know there are so many people here in Owensboro who are incredibly proud of him, including me. He is proof that hard work and staying true to yourself can make dreams come true.
