There’s a Pioneer Village in Southern Indiana?! How Did I Not Know This?
How have I lived here my whole life and didn't know this? There's a pioneer village in Southern Indiana that you can explore.
Indiana Hidden Gems
Indiana is a state that you definitely shouldn't underestimate. I have been a Hoosier since I was born, and I'm still learning about unique places all across Indiana. For instance, I recently learned about the Sculpture Trail, which has dozens of sculptures hidden throughout, making it a unique hike through the woods. Recently, I learned of several small towns across Southern Indiana that are all full of hidden gems.
However, today I learned about a really neat hidden gem, that's quite literally located right here in the Tri-State. It's a pioneer village that you can tour, and even cooler, it's literally in our own backyard! It's located just up the road from Evansville, in Rockport!
The Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum in Rockport
Okay, how have I lived my entire life in the Tri-State and had NO idea that we had a pioneer village here? This is a replica pioneer village that is dedicated to sharing what life was like when Abraham Lincoln once lived in the area (in the Hoosier state, we really love our 16th President). Lincoln lived in Spencer County from 1816 to 1830, and this educational village depicts what his life would have looked like.
The Village is one of southern Indiana’s true gems of living history. Travel back in time and walk through cabins showing life as it was during Abe Lincoln’s early years. Experience the history of the cabins that depict more than 200 years.
What Can You See at the Lincoln Pioneer Village and Museum?
According to the website, on museum grounds you can see all kinds of neat items from military artifacts, to clothing, utensils and a rocker beater loom that still works! The website also says that there's a hutch located in the Pioneer Village that was built by Abraham Lincoln himself with the help of his dad. How cool is that?

When is the Rockport Lincoln Pioneer Village and Museum Open?
Since touring this unique museum means you have to walk outside to get to the different structures, they are only open during warmer months.
You can enjoy the Lincoln Pioneer Village and Museum from May 1st through October 31st. You can find all of the information and hours of operation here. I can't believe I have never heard of this place! I will absolutely be making a trip to Rockport this summer to visit. My son would probably love it!
