Exercise Snacking- A New, Less Intimidating Way To Workout

If you're like me, you gained a few pounds during this pandemic. You're full of more stress and anxiety than ever before. It's caused me to eat more and do less. You might want to change your ways and lose some weight, but going back to the gym might be difficult. Whether you struggle to find the time to go there or you just lack the motivation to go, you're not alone.
While going back to the gym to workout might be a little intimidating, it's not impossible for you to still get a workout in without going to the gym.
There's an easy way for you to get back on track with your fitness goals throughout the day. It's called "exercise snacking". Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with eating snacks. I know, I was hoping it would too...
Exercise snacking is where you do small micro-workouts throughout the day to get you used to going back to the gym for longer amounts of time. Shape says that this can be any type of workout that you can do in small increments during the day. These micro-workouts would essentially add up to the same amount of time that you would spend in the gym working out.
According to Shape, there's some research that has found that breaking up prolonged sitting with short activity breaks can help stabilize blood sugar levels. Another study they mentioned showed that people who did three intermittent bouts of stair-climbing (of three flights or 60 steps per bout) a day achieved a similar cardiovascular boost one would get from a longer moderate-intensity workout.
This should be a little easier on people to achieve a decent workout throughout the day. Take a walk up and down your office's parking garage, walk along the river or the block on your break, or take advantage of those office stairwells as mentioned above. You could always get one of those exercise foot pedals for under your desk to keep those legs moving throughout the day. There are plenty of ways that you can get these macro-workouts in throughout the day. It's just a matter of finding what works best for you.
