New Study Reveals Cheapest Day to Fill Up Your Gas Tank in Indiana
You might want to start planning ahead to fill up your tank on a specific day of the week in Indiana to get the best savings. Here's what you need to know about the best and worst days to buy gas.
As of this writing (February 24, 2026), the national average for unleaded gas is $2.951, according to AAA. Indiana's average price per gallon as of today is $2.768. So, we are about 20 cents cheaper than the national average. Thankfully, it's not as expensive as it was this time last year, when the national average was $3.144, and Indiana's average price per gallon of unleaded gas was $2.914.That doesn't mean that some haven't been feeling the sting of gas prices every time we fill up our tanks. Granted, prices aren't over $5 like they were a few years ago.
All that said, gas prices change daily. Some days it's more expensive, and other days, you'll find better prices. It also depends on which gas station and city you're filling up in. But there are days that are actually cheaper to buy gas than others, according to a new study by GasBuddy. The company just released a new analysis identifying the cheapest and most expensive days of the week to buy gasoline in all 50 states, based on an analysis of daily statewide fuel prices over the past year. So let's check out how that looks for Indiana.

Best and Worst Days to Buy Gas in Indiana for 2026
According to GasBuddy, several states, including Indiana, have a pattern when it comes to gas prices that is known as "price cycling." They say that with price cycling, prices often “reset” sharply higher on a specific day, then slowly decline over the next several days before the next spike. The best day to save money on gas will come five to seven days after a price jump. GasBuddy goes on to say that "the gap between buying at the peak of a spike and near the bottom of the cycle can reach 15 to 45 cents per gallon or more, making timing especially important."

So, if you notice gas prices jumped up quite a bit, and you can wait a few days after a spike, you'll notice those prices will be considerably lower. When it comes to Indiana, the cheapest day of the week to fill up your tank is Monday. On the flipside, the most expensive day of the week is on Thursday. So avoid the pump on Thursday, if you can.
Of course, there are several ways in which you can save money when filling up your tank throughout the week. You can use an app like GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas stations. The ones right next to highways tend to be more expensive. So those apps are even more helpful when you're out of town and don't know where to go. It also helps to join gas stations' loyalty rewards programs. Some of them will save you 3-10 cents per gallon, while others will let you save on gas by accumulating points. Each gas station is different, but it doesn't cost you anything to sign up for the rewards program, so sign up for the ones that you frequent the most.
