You'll find the priciest grocery chain right here in Evansville, Indiana. Can you guess what it is?

One of my least favorite things to do as an adult is to go grocery shopping. It costs so much to get so little nowadays. Especially having kids who don't understand that the food is meant to last longer than one day.  I'm sure you'll agree that when you go to the checkout to purchase your groceries, you are always shocked by the fact that you spent a whole lot of money, even though your cart isn't even half full. Oh, and don't even get me started on the price of groceries in a full cart.

We all have our favorite grocery stores to shop at, though. These are the ones that we believe offer the best value for our money. Who doesn't want to stretch their dollar a little further? I enjoy places like Ruler Foods because I really can tell the difference in price at checkout compared to something like Walmart. That being said, there are all kinds of grocery stores across the country that pride themselves on their lower prices, so it's really all about preference.

The website, Mashed, recently posted an article revealing the priciest grocery store in America. As it turns out, what they claim may be the priciest place to grocery shop can be found right here in Evansville. You may or may not be able to guess which store it is.

Grocery Chain Dubbed ‘Priciest’ in America Can Be Found in Evansville

If you guessed The Fresh Market, you would be correct, as Mashed says it's the "priciest place to shop" in America. The Fresh Market was founded by Ray and Beverly Berry in 1982 after they took a trip to Europe and were inspired by all the open-air markets. They now have nearly 170 locations in 22 states and are dedicated to offering high-quality groceries. One of those locations happens to be right here in Evansville.

There's classical music playing over the loudspeakers, manned fish and meat stations, an in-house bakery, and a fresh floral section. All of this definitely makes for an above-average shopping trip. However, Mashed adds more explanation as to why it might be pricier:

Blame it on the expert food curators, imported specialties from around the world, and rare and unique goods. Still, its target demographic (affluent foodies, essentially) doesn't seem to mind paying a premium — not just for the selection of high-quality groceries, but also for the relaxed, elevated environment, which feels like a luxury compared to more chaotic grocery stores.

It's pretty much a given that you'll be spending more for some of the fancier brands The Fresh Market stocks. Like other retailers, The Fresh Market also has its own private label of groceries. Even if you were to just shop for the basics, The Fresh Market would still be expensive. That also includes The Fresh Market's store-branded items. Those are not the most cost-effective when compared to their competitors. See the report HERE. Does any of this come as a surprise to you? Furthermore, if you shop at the Fresh Market, does it deter you at all?
