There is no way to escape it, marriage and divorce are triggers for weight gain. According to a new study by Ohio State University, women tend to pack on the pounds after the wedding, while men put on weight after the divorce. Both marital transitions are known as "weight shocks". In both cases the weight gain can be large enough to pose a health risk according to researcher Dmitry Tumin. This is especially true if the marital transition occurs when people are over the age of 30.  The probability of weight gain for people in their mid 20's making these transitions is very low, but later in life it can be a big problem. "Married women often have a larger role around the house than men do, and they may have less time to exercise and stay fit than similar unmarried women," according to OSU professor of sociology Zhenchao Qian. "On the other hand, studies show that married men get a health benefit from marriage, and they lose that benefit once they get divorced, which may lead to weight gain." Either way, it's just one more thing to worry about, good times.
