You may or may not be surprised to find that one popular college town in Indiana is the most livable in the entire state.

Indiana towns have been a hot topic lately. When it comes to Indiana, we have no shortage of small towns with a few big cities scattered in there too. Everyone has small-town pride nowadays.  Recently we have covered many of these towns in articles such as the worst small towns in Indiana, an Indiana small town that makes you feel like you are in a Hallmark movie, the best must-visit small town in IndianaHGTV naming this Indiana town as the most charming in the state, and the most expensive place to live in Indiana.

To keep up with the theme of Indiana cities, GOBankingRates, recently revealed the most livable city in each state. Now, if you're like me, you might be wondering what "livable" actually means and how one determines that. A handful of factors contribute to ranking the most livable cities in each state including crime rates, pollution, transportation, housing market, economy, and healthcare.

Here's what GOBankingRates had to say about compiling the data to discover the most livable city in each state:

"For this study, GOBankingRates found the most livable city in each state and how much it costs to live there. To do this, GOBankingRates found the livability index for each city recording the city with the highest livability index. For each city, a number of factors were found including, the household median income, the average expenditure cost and the average monthly mortgage cost to determine the total monthly average cost of living in these most livable cities."

The 'Most Livable City' in Indiana

If you read the title of this article then you know that the most livable city in Indiana is a college town. That being said, we have quite a few of those all throughout the state. So, which one is it? Well, according to GOBankingRates, that honor goes to West Lafayette, Indiana, home of Purdue University.

Here are the numbers that led to GOBankingRates naming West Lafayette the most livable city in Indiana:

  • Household median income: $30,317
  • Livability: 90
  • Expenditure monthly average cost: $1,793
  • Mortgage monthly average cost: $2,143
  • Total cost of living monthly: $3,936

I can honestly say, I have not been to West Lafayette before. I will be going to visit this summer though, so I'll be able to see firsthand why this city is (or isn't) the most livable in Indiana. What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree?

16 Indiana Towns with Dirty-Sounding Names

A majority of these towns were given their names in the mid-to-late 1800s as settlers making their way across the country found unclaimed plots of land and decided to make them their own. While I imagine they thought the names they came up with were innocent, and perhaps a tribute to something in their lives, pop culture has warped our minds to the point since then that we can't help but think of something about the town that was never intended by its founders. Take a look at this list. I guarantee there's at least one name that will make you chuckle.
