Did pretzels first originate in Tell City, Indiana?
According to Wonderopolis.org., and the Tell City Pretzel Co, German and Swiss immigrants introduced the pretzel to North America in the 19th century. In 1858, Casper Gloor, a Swiss baker and member of the Swiss Colonization Society, settled in Tell City, Indiana.
Casper Gloor became famous for his secret pretzel recipe and today, Tell City Pretzels are still being produced and sold! To find out where you can purchase Tell City Pretzels, click here!
The first commercial hard pretzel bakery first opened in 1850 in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Today, the state of Pennsylvania produces 80% of the nation's supply of favorite pretzels.
