Did you know I used to have a mullet? I did. In the 90s, one of my best friends had really long, straight hair, and it looked great. I thought, "If he can do it, I can do it."

The thing is, not everyone has straight hair. While mine grows "out" as it gets longer, it eventually develops a wave. Steve's didn't. But that didn't stop me. I let it grow until it was halfway down my back. It was enormous, AND it gave me a mullet. It lived seven years from 1992 until I woke up one morning in 1999, called my hairstylist/barber (never sure), and said, "Get this crap off me!"

I wanted to share that story because a lot of people believed I did it because Billy Ray Cyrus was red hot in 1992, and that just wasn't true.

BUT I DON'T THINK MY MULLET WAS A KENTUCKY WATERFALL

There were no contests back in the 90s, and I was probably too old to enter one if there had been. Also, I was just growing hair; I had no idea it was even a mullet. I certainly don't know if you can classify my retro mane as a Kentucky Waterfall.

SIX KENTUCKIANS COMPETING FOR THE USA MULLET CHAMPIONSHIP

I'm also not sure if any of the six Kentuckians going for the USA Mullet Championship are specifically growing a Kentucky Waterfall--there are many styles--but I know that one of them--Josh Scott, a sophomore at Western Hills High School in Frankfort--IS.

Three years ago, after finding a picture of his dad sporting one, Josh decided he wanted to grow a mullet. At first, his mom was against the idea, but then she yielded. And Josh's looks great, so I think he has a good chance. If he wins, Josh plans on giving some of his money to his church who, he says, has been very good to him.

THE 2021 USA MULLET CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER

2021 champ, 11-year-old Allan Baltz ALSO saw it as an opportunity to give back.

I wish all the best to ALL of our Kentucky representatives in the USA Mullet Championship. I know the old song says, "Don't go chasin' waterfalls." But if it means a big win, go for it.
