The Indiana State Senate has proposed a bill that would return the old single-class basketball tournament as opposed to the current four-class tournament for boys and girls. The IHSAA, the Indiana High School Athletics Association, is opposed to the bill. IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox believes the single-class system is unfair to smaller more rural schools and that the current four-class system is much more fair.

There was a failed attempt in the 1990s to get a voter referendum to return to the old system.
