Severe Weather Forecast, Possibly During Evening Commute

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security reminds Hoosiers to practice safety as the state braces for a round of spring-like severe weather that could bring strong storms to southern and central Indiana, especially during the evening commute.

The National Weather Service has reported that showers and thunderstorms will move through the state during the afternoon and evening hours. Some storms, especially in southern and central Indiana, could be severe. Conditions will be windy today, with winds gusting in excess of 40 mph at times. Drivers with high-profile vehicles should be especially careful.

Temperatures will reach the upper 40s in northern Indiana, the upper 50s in central Indiana, and the upper 60s in southern Indiana. Tonight showers and thunderstorms will taper off into the overnight hours across the Hoosier state. Conditions will remain windy, with gusts between 30 and 35 mph at times. Temperatures in northern Indiana will fall to the upper 30s, and low 40s in central and southern Indiana.

Some of these severe storms may occur rapidly. As such, it is important to take precautions in advance of severe weather, in the event that immediate action is needed.

It’s a good idea to have an all-hazards weather radio or smartphone with a weather app nearby during daily activities. Keep the weather radio turned on at a volume loud enough that alerts can be heard over day-to-day activities. Alerts could provide important details about severe weather, with safety precautions to follow.

In addition:
• Know where to take shelter in the event of severe weather. Residents living in manufactured housing should identify another location to take shelter.
• Consider turning up the volume on cell phone notifications. Be familiar with the notification settings of weather apps.
• Keep all electronic devices fully charged in case of a power outage.
