The Indiana Department of Transportation has issued a traffic alert for pavement work that will cause more restrictions along the Lloyd Expressway.

If you have driven along the Lloyd Expressway over the past year or two, you have most certainly noticed all of the construction. These projects are all a part of TheLloyd4U initiative. This includes more than a dozen improvement projects along the Lloyd Expressway, including intersection improvements, bridge replacements, pavement replacements, and more.

The changes aim to help traffic flow better along the Lloyd Expressway. As you know, there has been construction on the east side and west side that has been ongoing for a while. A few projects have already been completed on the Lloyd Expressway, including the displaced left turn intersection at State Road 66 and Epworth Road and at the Stockwell intersection. As the construction continues, so do the lane closures and more. Case in point, a new alert for the busiest intersection on the Lloyd Expressway's east side.

Major Changes on the Lloyd Expressway

According to a recent update from TheLloyd4U, there will be a lot happening on the Lloyd Expressway at the Burkhardt Road intersection. Starting on or after Monday, June 15, there will be significant restrictions at the intersection that are expected to last about 7 days. TheLloyd4U says that all left turns at the intersection will be prohibited. There will also be no northbound or southbound through-movement on Burkhardt Road. Here's what you need to know beyond that information:

During the closure:

  • Right turns permitted
  • No left turns from the Lloyd to Burkhardt or Burkhardt to the Lloyd due to road surface work in the middle of the intersection
  • No north/south through-movement on Burkhardt Road

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction for through traffic on the Lloyd.

Recommended detours for Burkhardt traffic include:

  • Westbound traffic: Use Stockwell Road and the median U-turn
  • Eastbound traffic: Use the I-69 cloverleaf and return to Burkhardt

Work will not begin if the weeklong forecast shows inclement weather.

The diagram below will give you a visual of what that means.

While this might cause a little damper in your commute, it's certainly not as bad as some of the other areas drivers are challenged with along the Lloyd Expressway. Of course, all of this construction should lead to the Lloyd being more efficient and safer for people to navigate. That being said, we still have a way to go before those orange barrels are completely gone from the Lloyd Expressway with this project. You can take a look at the Lloyd4U project on the map below:
