If you've owned more than one vehicle over the past 15 or 20 years, chances are there have been stark differences in features. Today, it seems like many of the old favorites are all but forgotten.

Before 2007, Indiana's seat belt law only required front-seat passengers and children under 16 to wear seat belts. I was only eight years old at the time, but I remember that a lot of people were really unhappy when the law took effect on July 1st of that same year. In hindsight, that law has probably saved more lives than we'll ever know, making seat belts a standard safety feature in all modern vehicles. However, there was a time when vehicle safety looked a little different.

The Evolution of Car Features

My first car was a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, nicknamed "The Bean" for its ugly green color and round shape. It was a four-door sedan with minimal features but did have automatic windows, a power seat, a CD player, an airbag, and, of course, seat belts. However, my latest ride is a 2019 Ram 1500, which has all those things and much more, such as a backup camera, auto-dimming mirrors, and Bluetooth. It's quite an upgrade, one that the 16-year-old me probably wouldn’t even believe.

Vintage Car Features You Might Miss

Cars have improved drastically over the past 20 years, with automobile manufacturers placing a strong emphasis on both safety and convenience in their latest models. However, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that there are some older features I miss. I have many comforting memories of riding down the highway in less-than-luxury older vehicles with friends and family now gone. Perhaps you do too. See how many memories you can trigger while looking at AAA's list of outdated car features below.
