Battle of the Bangers: Kacey Musgraves vs. Zac Brown Band
Battle Of The Bangers
There's a plethora of music being released every single day. As a radio station, we can't play them all. I've put together a collection of some of my favorite tunes that either haven't made it, haven't been discovered, or haven't been heard. There may be artists you know, superstars you love, or names you've never heard of. I'll provide some backstory on the artist and my personal favorite lyrics from the song. You decide which one is the banger of the bunch to move on to next week's battle.
Kacey Musgraves - Mexico Honey
A true Texas woman, Kacey Musgraves developed her fame the old-fashioned way, working the Texas circuit. She also finished seventh on Nashville Star, which didn't hurt her rise to outlaw glory, but she hasn't necessarily spoken highly of the experience. Musgraves actually started in the early 2000's as part of a group known as the Texas Two Bits, where her star-studded yodeling took center stage. After Nashville Star, she signed with Mercury Nashville and released her first studio album, Same Trailer Different Park, in 2013. The album won the Grammy for Best Country Album. She's been winning traditional country fans over ever since. True to her Texas roots, her songs feature everything from her soft, sultry voice to a mariachi band. Her recently released album, Middle Of Nowhere, may be some of her best work yet. The single "Mexico Honey" is a wonderful song that showcases the unique, yet original Texas sound of Kacey Musgraves. Lori's Favorite Lyrics:
"I'm in a bad girl, good mood, wearing my gold hoops,
lining my lips right now in the rear view, baby, don't even play. When you look at me like that in your cowboy hat,
talking like a real man, makes me wanna take it
back, back, back to your place
Mmmmm."
Zac Brown Band - Any Day Now
After Zac Brown's first marriage of 12 years ended, he entered a chaotic relationship, marriage, and divorce with an actress and model. When the dust finally settled on that catastrophe, Brown finally found love with his most recent wife, jewelry maker Kendra Scott. My favorite part of sadness like this is usually the music that comes from it. The most powerful songs come from the pain and heartbreak of the best songwriters. Zac Brown is no exception to the rule. On the 2021 Zac Brown Band album, The Comeback, we find my favorite ZBB masterpiece, "Any Day Now". A simple conversation every couple has had, put to motion in a song where actions speak louder than words. Check out the heart-wrenching song below and don't forget to vote for your favorite banger!
Lori's Favorite Lyrics:
"Well, it is what it is, 'til it ain't, I guess
Try to learn from my mistakes but I ain't there yet
Never know when it's the last second chance you'll get
Should've paid more attention all the times you saidAny day now I'm gonna pack this truck up
You left my heart out in the rain to rust
Told me all the things that you had enough of
And I swore I was gonna change
Any day now I'll make up for the heartache
Any day now but you couldn't wait
Judging by the screen door slam, two taillights fading outta town
Guess it's any day now"
