Massive Morel Mushroom Found in Southern Indiana is As Big as a 2-Liter
One lucky Morel Mushroom hunter had quite the score in Southern Indiana!
Morel Mushroom Hunting
Spring is here which means morel mushroom hunting season in Indiana. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the best time to hunt for Morel Mushrooms is during April or May. So why do people go hunting for morels? Well, they're known to be a tasty food that many like to cook with.
Indiana DNR goes onto explain:
The morel, found throughout North America, is probably the best known of the edible mushrooms. Ranging in color from black to blonde, these tasty fungi can grow to be a foot tall. Most of the time, however, these “sponge” or “honeycomb” mushrooms are 3 to 5 inches tall. The best time for morel hunting is April and May. Morel hunting requires a slow pace, an eye for detail and a lot of patience. Although morels are often found in association with dead elms, tulip trees and beech-maple forests, morels have been known to suddenly appear in front yards, too.
Massive Morel Mushroom
While most morels end up being only a few inches tall, one lucky morel hunter in Southern Indiana bagged a massive morel. This morel morel is so big that it stands nearly as tall as a two-liter of Dr. Pepper.
Eric Elverd shared the photos of the massive morel to a Facebook group called Indiana Morel Mushroom Progression, and hundreds of impressed comments rolled in.
I reached out to Eric to ask about the morels, and while I promised him I would not share any secrets, I can say that it was found in Warrick County. Eric said his brother Tim was the lucky one who found it, but Eric was so impressed he had to photograph the mushroom and share it with the group.
