Illinois is one of the confirmed states that these egg products were shipped to, but the recall may extend nationwide.

Liquid Eggs

Usually, next to the eggs in grocery stores, you'll see cartons of "liquid eggs" or "egg substitute."  Many folks like to use these in place of actual eggs in recipes, but what exactly are they?  Well, mostly they're just egg whites with a few small things added in.  A popular "liquid egg" brand is Egg Beaters, and according to All Recipes, they are 99% egg whites with some added coloring, vitamins, and minerals to mimic a whole egg.  Many people like to use these kinds of egg substitutes for convenience and nutritional reasons.  However, there is currently a recall that affects 212,268 pounds of liquid egg products.

Massive Recall For Liquid Egg Products

According to the USDA, the recall is due to a tip that was received about a potential contamination of the liquid egg products with a cleaning solution with sodium hypochlorite.  The good news is that the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says that the risk is "negligible and should not cause adverse health consequences."

The recommendation from the FSIS is to throw away and not serve the items under this recall or return them to the place of purchase.  They say that as of now, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of this product, but they recommend contacting a healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

The recall states that these items were shipped to distributors in Ohio and Texas and for food service use in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, and Iowa.   The USDA says that even though these states are listed, there is a chance that these products were distributed nationwide, so it is recommended to check your fridge or freezer for these products to check just in case.  You can find the full page of information on this recall, including photos of the labels, here.
