Two pizzerias in Kentucky just got a big national spotlight by being named among the best pizza in the country.
Who doesn't enjoy pizza? Whether it be hand-tossed, thin crust, or deep dish, no matter what toppings you prefer, there are always some delicious go-to pizzas here in Kentucky. We have so many local pizza restaurants that might not get the love that they deserve. From takeout joints and holes-in-the-wall to restaurants, diners, and cafés that serve up some tasty slices of pizza, the options are endless. Honestly, that's where I believe you will find the best pizza in Kentucky, not at some of these major pizza chains.
USA Today recently released a list of the best pizza in America. The list features standout pizza restaurants across America, chosen by the USA Today Network food writers, that are worth the visit. Out of all the possibilities, two Kentucky pizza shops made the list. Let's find out which Kentucky pizzas are among the best in the country.
Wayfarer Tavern
Located in Dayton, Kentucky, Wayfarer Tavern is the first of two Kentucky pizza shops featured among the best in America. The pizza spot, which opened in 2025, describes itself as a neighborhood pizza joint, bar, and restaurant. USA Today had this to say about Wayfarer Tavern:
Owner Mike Dew has created a pizza all his own, a hybrid of Midwest tavern-style pizza with a bit of South Shore bar pizza (popular between South Boston and Cape Cod) and Detroit-style pizza in its DNA. Dew cooks his pies in a 1.5-inch-deep round, lipped pan so the cheese caramelizes along the edges, similar to a Detroit pizza. Similar to South Shore and Midwest Tavern pizzas, its crust is thin with just the right amount of chew. While the Korean Corn Cheese pizza and Pickle Power pizzas are customer favorites, the Meatwad − with meatballs, peppadew peppers, whipped ricotta, basil, red sauce and cheese − is not to be missed. — Keith Pandolfi, Cincinnati Enquirer
The Post
The second Kentucky pizza joint named among the best pizza in America can be found in Louisville. The Post has a couple of different locations in the city and offers 12 varieties of New York-style pizzas, as well as a rotating slice-of-the-day. USA Today says:
A 2025 Food Network roundup proclaimed that The Post serves the best slice of pizza in Kentucky. It opened in 2015 in a former VFW Post building and serves 12 varieties of New York-style pizzas in three sizes. Popular choices include "The Lone Wolf," topped with pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, green pepper, red onion, mushroom, and Kalamata olives. — Amanda Hancock, The Courier-Journal
