Today I read a story about a woman at a store was checking out and the cashier politely said "ma'am I'll gladly help you when you're done with your conversation" and refused to check the lady out until she got off her phone.  While I personally don't have the guts to do that, there have been times I wished I did! So do YOU think it's rude to talk on the phone while being checked out at the store?  WKDQ listeners didn't hold back!!

Here's what I say:

I've worked in retail before, I've been the cashier at a bakery before, I get it.  People can be very rude.   One of my biggest pet peeves was people who would come up ON THEIR CELL PHONE and think it was okay to blatantly ignore me while I was checking them out.  Personally when I'm in line at a checkout if I'm on my phone I'll hang up or ask the other person to hold on and set my phone down until I'm done checking out.   I've had times where I've been checking out and my phone has rang, and I'll hit the ignore button on my phone.  I know what it's like to be on the other end of that, I just think it's common courtesy to put your phone down for the one minute it takes you to check out at the store.  But that's just me.

Here's what some WKDQ listeners said:

Stephanie Clevenger YES! I work at a truck stop and it's my biggest pet peeve to have customers on their phones while checking out. Then get upset cause your interrupting their phone call to ask questions. There's no phone call that important that it can't wait 30 seconds to finish their transaction. Other wise excuse yourself from the line and take your call

Chelsea Rae Griffin Yes. I work in retail and you can't understand what the customer wants if they are on the phone talking. Then they get mad at you if they don't get something you thought they didn't want. And not too mention people are hearing you business.

Jamie Trodglen Yes its rude and yes I am guilty but here is my thinking....do I be rude to the one I am talking to by cutting them off mid conversation and checkout or do I be rude to someone I don't know lol actually I am usually nice but hang up quickly before its my turn but sometimes I am just on the phone with someone u can't get a word in with! Ugh! I say its frustrating on both ends if u r one who truly cares about others....#oopsleftmyphoneincar

Natalie Payne I'm a server and its rude when your trying to take a order and your guest won't put the phone down.

Jessica Carol Harris As a Walmart employee, I don't think it's rude at all so long as you're paying attention to the cashiers

So what do YOU say?
