Battle Of The Bangers

There's a plethora of music being released every single day. As a radio station, we can't play them all. I've put together a collection of some of my favorite tunes that either haven't made it, haven't been discovered, or haven't been heard. There may be artists you know, superstars you love, or names you've never heard of. I'll provide some backstory on the artist and my personal favorite lyrics from the song. You decide which one is the banger of the bunch to move on to next week's battle.

Kacey Musgraves - Mexico Honey

A true Texas woman, Kacey Musgraves developed her fame the old-fashioned way, working the Texas circuit. She also finished seventh on Nashville Star, which didn't hurt her rise to outlaw glory, but she hasn't necessarily spoken highly of the experience. Musgraves actually started in the early 2000's as part of a group known as the Texas Two Bits, where her star-studded yodeling took center stage. After Nashville Star, she signed with Mercury Nashville and released her first studio album,  Same Trailer Different Park, in 2013. The album won the Grammy for Best Country Album. She's been winning traditional country fans over ever since. True to her Texas roots, her songs feature everything from her soft, sultry voice to a mariachi band. Her recently released album,  Middle Of Nowhere, may be some of her best work yet. The single "Mexico Honey" is a wonderful song that showcases the unique, yet original Texas sound of Kacey Musgraves. Don't forget to vote for your favorite banger below!

Lori's Favorite Lyrics:

"I'm in a bad girl, good mood, wearing my gold hoops,

lining my lips right now in the rear view, baby, don't even play. When you look at me like that in your cowboy hat,

talking like a real man, makes me wanna take it

back, back, back to your place

Mmmmm."

Lake Street Dive - Godawful Things

Technically, these guys aren't country. However, their sound is so eclectic that much of their music could easily be played on country radio. In fact, the group's original intention when they formed in 2004 was to be a free country band, playing country music in an improvised, experimental style. In my opinion, they certainly captured that. Some songs have a big band feel and sound straight out of the 1950s. Other songs are slow and melodramatic, while others are toe-tappers you can't get out of your head. "Godawful Things" fell right into my Toe-Tappers playlist the minute I heard it. As the song explores the many reasons a person might want to go back to an ex, by the end, you'll want all the "Godawful Things" Lake Street Dive has to offer. Enjoy the tunes and don't forget to vote for your favorite banger!

Lori's Favorite Lyrics:

"Well, thank the good lord
(Thank the good lord)
For those god-awful things
(God-awful things)
That brought you
Brought you right back to me
(Brought you right back)"

Top 10 Kacey Musgraves Songs: Hits and Deep Cuts That Every Country Fan Should Know

The songs that make Kacey Musgraves a country music treasure feature lyrics that explain complicated emotions and arrangements that can't be ignored. Her top songs are often poetic, but never boring or too smart for anyone without a degree in literature to understand.

Hits from four of her six non-holiday albums are featured on this list of Musgraves best songs. Most were released as singles but few were "hits" in the traditional sense. They'll all live on for generations however.
