Do you know what the leading causes of death in Indiana are? Some of these might surprise you.

We are all aware of how fragile life can be. It can be taken away at any given time. That's why it's so very important to not only take care of your body but to make every day count because we aren't guaranteed tomorrow. There are several ways in which a person can pass away. The older I have gotten, the more I have realized that I'm not invincible. It's almost become borderline morbid for me lately, thinking about how my time is one day going to come to an end. I'm nowhere near ready for that, especially with my first child on the way. It's given me a new perspective on life, and it is also making me want to take the steps to take care of my body and take all the preventative measures I can when it comes to my health.

Having said that, I was curious about the leading causes of death in Indiana. So, I went with the most definitive source I could find, which is the Centers for Disease Control. From what I can assess, it appears their list is based on the most recent fatality information regarding Indiana specifically. They have the ten leading causes of death for the state on there, and some of these might surprise you.

So, what are they? Let's take a look at the ten leading causes of death in the state of Indiana.

10. Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis

There are several causes for Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis, that include alcohol use, hepatitis and other viruses, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It's become more problematic over the years. This definitely wasn't one of the causes of death I expected on this list.

9. Kidney Disease

The older I get, the more that I hear about Kidney Disease among people. Sadly, it is also sometimes combined with cancer to form a deadly combination.

8. Alzheimer’s Disease

This one hits close to home as I have known a few people to succumb to this illness. It's a long, sad goodbye that I hope I never have to experience with my loved ones again.

7. Diabetes

Another cause of death that hits close to home as several of my family members have been diagnosed with it. My uncle even passed away as a result of his diabetes. It's just another reason to be mindful of what you put into your body and to always get your blood sugar checked.

6. Stroke

The more of these causes of death I see here, the more I realize how much they run in my family. Strokes can come out of nowhere. They can leave you partially paralyzed or worse.

5. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases

This is one that I am surprised to find as one of the leading causes of death in Indiana because you don't hear much about these diseases compared to others. For those who aren't familiar, these diseases comprises of three major diseases, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma, which are all characterized by shortness of breath caused by airway obstruction. Then again, with the smoking rate, I shouldn't be too surprised.

4. Accidents

There are no shortages of accident types that can lead to death. The main type of accident that we associate with leading to death would be an automobile accident. So, please, be careful out there!
