In a state that consumes a hefty amount of sweet tea, it’s good to know that you won’t break the bank, as Indiana is now among the cheapest states to buy it.

I've been a big coffee and tea drinker my entire adult life. While most mornings I opt for a steaming cup of joe, there are times I prefer a freshly brewed cup of Earl Grey tea—mostly during the winter. At night, I enjoy drinking chamomile or sleepy-time tea to help me get the best shut-eye possible. I'm not lying when I tell you there are about two drawers full of tea boxes at my house, constantly rotated out. Fortunately, it's a relatively inexpensive hobby.

A Look at the Top 5 States with the Cheapest Tea

According to a report from the restaurant point of sale and management system known as Toast, consumers paid an average of $3.74 for a cup of tea last year. This data was compiled using aggregated sales from restaurants on the Toast platform. Prices were further broken down by state, and below, you can see which states are the cheapest for ordering tea.

  • Iowa — $3.38
  • Wisconsin — $3.38
  • South Dakota — $3.31
  • Kansas — $3.27
  • Nebraska — $3.00

While Indiana didn’t crack the top five cheapest states for tea, it did land on the list at No. 6, with an average price per cup of $3.40. Additionally, the data found that 31 states actually prefer tea over coffee, and believe it or not, Indiana was one of those states. This trend seemed to be consistent across the entire southern side of the country.

All that said, it’s important to note that we’re not just talking about hot tea here. The results were based on categories like specialty, iced, black, herbal, and green tea. Therefore, it’s probably not too hard to believe that we Midwesterners would rather have a glass of cold sweet tea than coffee.
