Pickle Lovers Rejoice! Indiana is Home to a Famous Pickle Festival
Now this sounds dill-icious!
Indiana Festivals
We are no strangers to festivals in the Hoosier State. From the largest festival in the state, the Covered Bridge Festival, to Evansville's own Fall Festival, there's always something going on. One thing you can guarantee all of these festivals will have in common is food. However, one festival in Indiana celebrates not just any food, it's just for pickles!
Pickle Lovers Rejoice
Pickles are one of those foods that you either love or you're wrong. Personally, I can't get enough pickles. Whether their traditional dill, a little sweet like the bread and butter pickles, or a little spicy, I have yet to meet a pickle I don't like. So when I learned there was a pickle festival in Indiana, I immediately added this event to my bucket list.
Indiana's Pickle Festival
Located in the small town of St. Joe, Indiana is a famous festival, the St. Joe Pickle Festival. This festival is dedicated to pickles, complete with a pickle eating contest, and a pickle juice drinking contest. The 28th annual Pickle Festival takes place every July, and this year is happening July 18th through 20th (don't worry if you missed it, you can plan and get ready for next year) But pickle eating isn't all, there's live music, plenty of food (pickles among the many menu items), fireworks, a car show, craft vendors, kids activities, and a town parade. The festival also comes with tours of the local pickle factory.
Pickle Factory Tours
Sechler's Pickle Factory has been a part of the St. Joe community since the 1920s, so it makes sense that this town would celebrate with a pickle festival. The tour will not only teach you about pickles, it will also teach you about the history of pickle making in the area.
Learn about the early history of pickle-making in St. Joe and see the original home of Ralph and Anne Sechler, who started the company in 1921 under the name "St. Joe Valley Pickles." Outdoors, you will see many of our pickle storage vats where cucumbers are received and cured. If you're lucky, you may even get to watch as fresh cucumbers are received and dumped into the tanks!
