Artificial Intelligence (AI) is something we are encountering more and more every day. Everyone has their own opinions on the matter, but one thing is clear: it’s here—and we have it at our disposal. While I was initially very hesitant to try anything AI-related, I’ve grown more accustomed to using it as a time-saving tool over the last couple of months. For example, ChatGPT is great for checking grammar when writing and for coming up with things like names for pets, dinner ideas, and so on. The use of AI is only growing, and now it looks like the state of Indiana is getting on board the AI train.

What is a Generative AI Chatbot?

AI can be used for anything these days, from cloning voices and creating images to simply answering questions. Many businesses and government agencies even use AI generative chatbots to assist the folks they serve. In short, these chatbots are computer programs that use AI technology to understand inquiries and generate responses. They can serve as a time-saving tool for both businesses that are short-handed and customers who want a quick answer without waiting in line or on hold.

While all of that sounds great on paper, this technology is certainly not perfect as it stands in 2024. As the video above notes, chatbots don't always get the facts right. A chatbot's database might have false information, or the bot may misinterpret your request. Additionally, chatbots have no way to experience empathy. Thus, while chatbots are designed to be personable and polite, they are far from human, with only programmed ethics.

The State of Indiana has launched a beta version of its new AI chatbot, designed to help Hoosiers with any questions they might have. The new tool, which you can see by clicking HERE, has a six-point disclaimer posted before entering the chat room. The disclaimer warns that information gained through the chatbot should be verified and that the State is not responsible for any damages that might occur from its use. I spent a few minutes interacting with the chatbot, asking questions about state driver’s licensing requirements, and found that all the information seemed to be correct.

According to Government Technology, the new system is a product of the Indiana Office of Technology’s (IOT) collaboration with vendor Tyler Technologies. Testing of the tool took place in May 2024, and the product was quietly launched in June 2024. On September 16, 2024, the new AI chatbot had 5,295 interactions, with an average of eight questions per user. Government Technology noted that while there is limited data, early feedback is positive. Personally, I find the tool to be a great resource, but I believe you should keep in mind the points mentioned in the disclaimer.
