Here’s Where You Can Learn the Art of Calligraphy in Kentucky
When I worked at the former Owensboro art haven, Studio Slant, we hosted many different classes in our workshop. I led painting parties called Canvas & Cocktails for grown-ups and Canvas & Cupcakes for the kiddos. Over the years, I taught myself how to do pretty lettering to help people personalize their artwork and door hangers. Not gonna lie, as my own worst critic, it looked pretty rough at first.
One day, we discovered the amazing calligraphy talents of Lauren Fitzmaurice of Renmade Calligraphy and invited her to host lessons at Studio Slant. Not only is she talented, she is so kind and patient which makes for a great teacher. I would work our retail space on her workshop days and couldn't help but listen to her advice and tips which helped me majorly improve my lettering skills. I mean look how good she is!
It's one of the best skills I have ever learned and has come in handy many times. Now, it's actually one of my favorite hobbies that has become a part-time side hustle. It makes me so happy to create repurposed "Remixes" with my lettering and thrifted prints and paintings. A perfect creative outlet for me and honestly, my artistic therapy at times. I owe Lauren a huge thank you for letting me "eavesdrop" and helping me grow as an artist.
Lauren's "day job" is as an elementary school teacher, and she and her husband have three sweet boys. Her journey with lettering started when her oldest son was in the hospital as a baby. Her sweet mama gifted her a spot in an online calligraphy class to help her have an outlet when life was stressful and hard and she was hooked.
She started taking orders for wedding envelopes and other projects until catching the eye of some pretty big brands like Dunkin' Donuts, Tombow lettering supplies, and Brit + Co. Then, she was invited to travel teaching other people lettering skills and even creating her own online calligraphy class. Talk about a full-circle moment. Her most recent major accomplishment was publishing a beautiful lettering handbook.
