When Is It Appropriate To Tip?

I've worked in the service industry, on and off, since I was 14. I've worked in kitchens, served tables, delivered pizzas, tended bar, and more. I understand the importance of tipping so well that I think customer service in this form should be a mandatory class in high school. In today's world, the majority of people do not tip correctly, if at all. In your defense, times have changed, and there are several more situations in which a tip may be required. The majority of service industry workers are making below minimum wage and are dependent on your tips to feed their children. Bellhops, valets, Uber and taxi drivers, food delivery drivers, karaoke DJs or bands; the list of people asking for your tip money never ends, but do they all deserve your hard-earned money? In my book of best practices, if you have to ask yourself if they deserve a tip, they most likely deserve a tip. Let's take a look at what the word "tip" means.

Is TIP Actually An Acronym?

I once watched a documentary that explained TIPS is an acronym, meaning to ensure proper service, which was practiced in England. When you walked into a place where service was required, you tipped before being seated. The amount you tipped determined the level of your overall experience that evening. From food selection, table seating, and views, to the actual service you receive from your waiter, every part of your evening is determined by you before you even sit down. Let it be known, this theory is challenged almost everywhere. There are multiple theories on where the word came from, but I prefer the premise of this one.

Great! I Know I Should Tip, But How Much?

With so many people to tip, it's hard to know exactly who might be expecting a tip. Yes, if you're that drunk person demanding to hear a specific song from the band that already has a planned set list, you should pay extra for that. And yes, if it's "Freebird," the prices are justified. Personally, I consider housekeeping and front desk an untipped position, as their hourly compensation should satisfy their daily duties. A good reference point I like to use to determine if a tip is necessary is whether or not I can do the job they are doing for me. I can carry my own bags up to my room, but if I'm going to allow someone else to, they deserve a tip. Here's an excellent resource from the Nashville Visitor's Guide to help you figure out the appropriate amount for the job performed.
