My mother was a stay at home when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's as were most moms from that era. Today, more and more moms are trying to balance family, home and career at the same time. Some are either by choice stay at home moms or they left the workplace when they had children. Make no mistake, being a stay at home mom is WORK and working moms wind up with two fulltime jobs! Every year the people at salary.com compile a survey to determine what mom should make if she were paid a salary. The 'mom' job is actually made up of 10 different jobs, each with a different salary. They then figure how many hours per week is spent on each job and then they do the math. The 10 jobs are: housekeeper, day care center teacher, cook, computer operator, janitor, chief executive officer, psychologist, laundry machine operator, van driver and facilities manager. When all of this is calculated out, mom should be earning about $115,432 per year to be a stay at home. Working moms 'at home' salary would be about $63,472, in addition to her salary in the workplace. So, maybe instead of or in addition to flowers, candy, a meal out or a card, maybe mom should get a RAISE! Food for thought and happy Mother's Day.
