It seems a bit ironic that a vacuum that uses water to clean your floor can catch fire, but that's the case with a few of Bissell's wet-dry vacuum models.

Bissell Recalling Around 61,00 Wet-Dry Vacuum Models Due to Potential Fire Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USPSC) issued the recall late last week saying a circuit board inside three models of the cordless wet-dry multi-surface vacuums has a defect in the battery pack that can "cause it to overheat and smoke, posing a fire hazard."

The recall applies to the following models.

  • 2551
  • 2551W
  • 25519

A sticker featuring the model number can be found on the vacuum when the clean water tank has been taken off. It will look like this:

The USCPSC says the vacuums were sold at Walmart stores nationwide as well as online through Walmart's website, Amazon, Costco, Kohl's, Fingerhut, Ace Hardware, Wayfair, and Bissell.

So far, the USCPSC has received 66 reports of vacuums smoking and putting out a burning smell. Off those 66 reports, five involve the battery pack catching fire, and of those five, three resulted in "minor property damage," and one resulted in a burn injury.

What to Do if You Have a Recalled Vacuum

First and foremost, stop using your vacuum. Next, contact a local Bissell authorized dealer about getting a replacement battery pack for free. If the dealer doesn't have an authorized service technician who can replace the battery pack for you, contact Bissell at 1-855-417-7001 from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. Eastern Time Monday through Friday or between 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. Eastern Time on Saturdays to schedule an in-home repair free of charge to you.
