The Safest Small City in the U.S. for 2025 is Right Here in Indiana
You may or may not be surprised that one small city in Indiana was recently named the safest in the United States.
When you think of Indiana overall, you don't really associate it with crime. Sure, criminal acts happen all of the time, but that's not typically the stereotype that goes with Indiana. I mean Indiana isn't even one of the top ten most dangerous states in the country. That being said, we still see so much on the news about crime, and the increasing amounts of criminal activity across the state. It makes you stop and take a look at your area and wonder how safe it actually is. Well, as it turns out, Indiana is home to the safest small city in the entire country.
Money Geek recently named the safest cities and towns for each state in America based on their per capita cost of fighting crime. To elaborate further, they analyzed crime statistics and quantified the cost of those crimes to identify the safest and least safe small cities and towns — those with 30,000 to 100,000 residents. To my surprise, the first city that I saw on this list was one from right here in the Hoosier State.
The Safest Small City in the U.S. for 2025 is Right Here in Indiana
The safest small city in the United States is located in Bartholomew County, Indiana. The city is located roughly 40 miles south of Indianapolis. That city is none other than Columbus. The crime cost per capita in Columbus is $22.
I decided to dig a little deeper into Columbus on Niche. 65% say they feel very safe while the other 23% say pretty safe and both crowds mention a solid police presence that makes them feel more comfortable there. 75% say the police are very visible and responsive. Columbus, Indiana gets a B+ rating for crime overall. It received an Overall Niche Grade of an A, so I'd say that it's a pretty great place to live.
Columbus wasn't the only city in Indiana to crack the top 15. In fact, Zionsville comes in at number four on the list. You can check it out in full detail by clicking here.
