Evansville Named Indiana’s Most Dangerous City in 2026
While it may or may not come as a surprise to you, Evansville has been named Indiana's most dangerous city. Here's why.
Every big city has its good and bad parts of town. Locals typically know which parts of town to avoid. However, if you are new to the area or just don't know Evansville neighborhoods that well, you might find yourself in the wrong part of town. Locals know which parts of town to steer away from, especially when they're always in the news for one reason or another. That being said, the Evansville Police Department and Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office have done a great job at providing several different outreach programs that aim to build relationships with the community and decrease crime. In fact, in a recent interview, Evansville Police Chief actually discussed that and how shootings and crime have decreased since 2024. You can read more about that by clicking here.

Even with that information, the City of Evansville found itself at the top of a list that might come as a surprise to some. The folks over at Areavibes decided to take a look at all of the Indiana towns and cities and compile a list of the Most Dangerous Cities in Indiana for 2026.
Is Evansville the Most Dangerous City in Indiana?
Normally, when a list like this is released, Evansville is typically included in the most dangerous cities in the state. It's not really surprising that it is, given the fact that it is the 3rd largest city in the state. Typically citiest like Indianapolis, South Bend, and Gary are at the top of these lists, but that's not the case here. Evansville was named the most dangerous city in Indiana for 2026 by Areavibes.
I think for something like this, it's important to know what the methodology was for a ranking as serious as this. According to Areavibes:
The AreaVibes list of the most dangerous cities in Indiana is derived from the FBI's uniform crime reporting program (UCR Program) from their most recent release. To compile this list, we used violent crime data (assualt, robbery, rape and murder) per 100,000 people and only included Indiana cities with a population of 5,000 or more. Displaying violent crime rates based on a population of 100,000 allows for an equal comparison for each city.
So, why Evansville? What makes it the most dangerous city in Indiana based on that criteria? Areavibes says that Evansville has a population of 121,758, with 3.30 violent crimes per day. The data goes on to say that you have a 1 in 83 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime. It goes into more detail when it comes to crime in Evansville:
Evansville, IN holds the distinction of being the #1 most dangerous city in Indiana with 1,206 violent crimes per 100,000 people. The area continues to struggle with elevated assault (1,053), robbery (57), rape (86) and homicide (10) rates, as the violent crime rate comes in at 285% higher than the Indiana average. Contributing to these numbers could be the higher than average rates of poverty, unemployment, and gang activity. Ongoing efforts from local law enforcement and the community have been created to help reduce the crime rates going forward.
Does this data surprise you at all? Again, the law enforcement in the community has been making great strides to reduce crime in Evansville, but they can't do it alone. It will take everyone in the community to help keep it that way.
