Shoplifting is a serious concern for businesses of all sizes, including major retailers like Walmart. There are some items that are more prone to getting stolen than others.

FinanceBuzz released a list of some of the most commonly shoplifted items. Let's take a look at them and some ways to prevent shoplifting.

High-Value, Easily Concealable Items:

  • Electronics, Video games, and Cell phone accessories: Implement security measures like display cases, alarms, and staff vigilance.
  • Cosmetics: Secure high-end products with lockable displays or sensor tags.
  • Jewelry: Limit displays, use security mirrors, and require assistance for high-value items.
  • Over-the-counter medications: Employ lockable cabinets or staff authorization for purchase.

Everyday Necessities:

  • Baby formula: Utilize sensor tags or staff-assisted checkout for sensitive areas.
  • Razor blades: Secure displays with lockable cases or alarms.
  • Laundry detergent: Consider bulk purchase programs for deterring large-scale theft.
  • School/office supplies: Implement weight sensors on exit points or require receipts for bulk purchases.
  • Clothes: One tactic to prevent shoplifting in the dressing room is to limit the amount of items that can be taken in at one time.

Small Business Owners:

Unfortunately, we know that our locally owned shops deal with shoplifters every week. But with the high-quality security cameras that are available, there is a good chance that social media will help locate alleged thieves.
