Select Brands of Hummus Sold at Schnucks Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination
Hummus is a delicious and healthy snack that has grown in popularity over the past few years. However, one company is asking you don't eat certain brands of their version due to the possibility its contaminated with the bacteria, Listeria.
The Food and Drug Administration announced earlier this week that Pita Pal Foods, LP is voluntarily recalling several versions of their product after the bacteria was discovered in their manufacturing facility following a FDA inspection.
The products were sold nationwide under a variety of different brand names including Schnucks and Fresh Thyme store brands. The complete list of products can be found on the FDA website.
Listeria infections can cause short-term health issues in healthy people including high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, it can be far more dangerous for young people, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, causing serious illness or even death. It can also "cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."
If you have any of the affected products on the list, Pita Pal Foods asks you return the product to the store you bought it from for an exchange or refund.
Personally, I like my hummus on the spicier side, and will even make it myself from time to time. It's really easy and only takes a few minutes (plus, you'll save a little money too). Here's the recipe I like to go with when the mood strikes.
